How the Calculation Works
Your average rating is simply your total star points divided by your number of reviews. To raise that average, each new review has to pull the number up. The formula is:
reviews needed = (current review count × (target − current rating)) ÷ (value of each new review − target)
Two things move the needle most. The first is how many reviews you already have, a large review count is “heavier,” so it takes more new reviews to shift the average. The second is how close your target sits to a perfect 5. Reaching exactly 5.0 is mathematically impossible once you have even one review below five stars, you can only get closer and closer. That’s why most businesses aim for a realistic, trustworthy 4.7 to 4.9.
